Using Chalk
- The University of Chicago Chalk (or Blackboard) system
will be the main online environment we will use for this course. The present webpage is only
a subset of what you can find on Chalk, and I only use it so that you can see the more
important materials on the same page. For scores and grades, or other class announcements and
discussions, you will need to use Chalk.
- If you have not worked with Chalk before,
here
is a document on how to get started (e.g., obtain a login).
Syllabus, TA, Reviews, Exams
- You can download the syllabus here.
- The TA for the course is Marlena Lee, a PhD student in Finance.
E-mail: mlee5@ChicagoGSB.edu.
- Review sessions will be held starting with the first week of classes.
The sessions are optional, but strongly recommended for those with questions about
course material and assignments.
- Fridays 11:45-1:15pm, HPC 10
- The Midterm will be held on Wed Feb 8, 1:30-2:50pm for Section 02,
and Tue Feb 7, 6:00-7:20pm for Section 03.
- The Final exam will be held on Wed Mar 15, 3:00-6:00pm for
Section 02, and Tue Mar 14, 6:30-9:30pm for Section 03.
- The midterm and the final exam will be open book.
Texts
- Required
- Bodie, Kane and Marcus, Investments, McGraw-Hill, 6th Edition, 2005.
- Course Pack - BUS 35000-02/03, Winter 2006.
- Recommended
- Malkiel, A Random Walk Down Wall Street, Norton, 8th Edition, 2004.
- Siegel, Stocks for the Long Run, McGraw Hill, 3rd Edition, 2002.
Homework and Case Assignments
- There are 8 homework assignments, which consist of problems and
several applications to real data.
- In determining the final grade for the homework, only the
best 7 problem sets will be counted.
- There is a case write-up, about the Dimensional Fund Advisors (DFA).
- You may do the homework problems and the case write-up in groups that
are not to exceed FOUR people.
Stock Tracking and Investment Project
- The purpose of this project is to enhance your understanding of what
makes stock prices move and to improve your ability to follow and
digest financial news. Moreover, you will learn how to manage a portfolio
formed with various financial assets, including the stock of a
company of your choice.
- At the beginning of the quarter, you will choose one company whose
stock you will follow throughout the quarter. At the end of the
quarter, you will turn in a brief report on how the company has done and
why.
- At the same time, you will manage a portfolio formed with your
chosen stock, a wide stock index, and a risk-free asset (bond). You
will then trade in these assets, and write a report on how your
portfolio performed.
- In addition to the three-asset portfolio described above, you will
be given the option to trade in another portfolio formed with any
financial assets of your choice, including futures, mutual funds,
international assets, and options.
- The 2 portfolios will be managed using
Stock-Trak.
Each student registered in the course will automatically be given
a free account on the Stock-Trak webpage.
- The work on these reports is to be done individually.
- Don’t worry, the performance of your stock or your portfolio will not
affect your grade
